Proveniente de uma família de agricultores da Baixa Baviera, Ratzinger estudou filosofia e teologia na Universidade de Munique. Obteve o doutoramento em teologia em 1953, e tornou-se professor universitário.
Em 1962, com apenas 35 anos, participa no Concílio Vaticano II, ao lado do Cardeal Joseph Frings.
Das suas numerosas publicações, destaque para "Introdução ao Cristianismo", publicado em 1968; "Dogma e revelação", uma antologia de ensaios, sermões e reflexões dedicados à acção pastoral, publicado em 1973.
Em Março de 1977, é nomeado Arcebispo de Munique e de Freising por Paulo VI, e a 28 de Maio de 1977 assume a responsabilidade da Diocese da Baviera.
No Consistório de 27 de Junho do mesmo ano é proclamado Cardeal por João Paulo II. O mesmo Papa que, em Novembro de 1981, o nomeou Perfeito da Congregação para a Doutrina da Fé, Presidente da Comissão Pontifícia e da Comissão Teológica Internacional.
